Spiders!

The Tarantula

There are more than 850 species of Tarantulas, such as the Goliath and the Theraphosa. These hairy, nocturnal arachnids, meaning mainly active at night, are part of the Hairy Mygalmorph Spider family. Tarantulas live mostly in Tropical and Subtropical, meaning on the border of the Tropicals, but are also found in the deserts, in South America and in the South Western States. Tarantulas can live up to 15-25 years,  grow up to a foot, their fangs can grow up to an inch and they can lay up to 200 eggs at a time.

Unlike many other spiders, Tarantulas don’t spin web for their home, instead they dig themselves burrows with silk outlining the walls and the opening so that dirt doesn’t get in. How do they catch prey you may ask? Well, they put silk on the ground so that when a prey comes such as a floor mouse, they can feel them move on the silk, then when they prey comes closer, the Tarantula’s sensitive hairs sense the prey. Then ATTACK, the Tarantula catches the prey and bites it and fills it with venom, but to humans a Tarantula is no more than a bee sting and Tarantulas also have hairs that can cause irritation.

The Epeitra Spider

There are 650 species such as the Pumpkin Spider and the Orb weaver spider. These spiders are nocturnal and part of the Araneus Marmoreus Spider family. They are found in Europe and North America. They can live up to 1 year and lay hundreds maybe thousands of eggs and cover them with silk, making a sac.

They weave a pretty silk for their home and catching their prey, they eat mostly insects, and have been know to eat frogs and hummingbirds. Like some spiders they have poor eyesight. These spiders are your normal-everyday house spiders. To humans their bite is nothing.

Counter Argument Against Animal Rights And Cruelty

I understand that people who love animals want non-human animal rights, but along with animal rights comes a bunch a consequences. For example, if all animals were treated with nothing other than kindness, then there would be no zoos, no animal entertainment, no animal tests, no animal fur for clothes, no hunting, no medicine, no fresh meat, and no hard labor done. If you think hard about it, animals were not created to be kind to but to do our hard work, give us medicine, clothes, food etc.

Philosophers have stayed away from arguing about animal rights because of the consequences are so limiting for humanity. I think that only adult animals should have rights because they are ‘subjects-of-a-life’.

People who love animals should start facing the facts that this world is not all kindness to animals and no abuse, because it isn’t, we need animals to survive.

Persuasive Essay On Animal Rights And Cruelty

You might think that our world is amazing, but then when you look closer you wish you were blind. Animals are treated like garbage. Did you know that people’s lives are saved by animals? For example when Lewis and Clark were on the expedition they almost got ran over buy a buffalo but then Lewis’ dog started barking and they rolled out of the way. You may not realize it, but when you grow close to a animal you can not let go of it.  I feel all animals should be treated with love as if they were your own kid, your own flesh and blood.

Animals like pigs may be stinky and weird but when you really pay close attention you realize they are treated without an ounce of love or kindness. When pigs are being loaded or unloaded and they refuse they are either pushed on the snout or whipped with are electric whip. Chickens, for example, are buried alive, there are 500 billion chickens killed per year! And they are artificially and chemically raised. Chickens may not be the best of animals, but that does not mean they have to be treated like garbage, they have feelings too. Same goes with horses. They are a great and amazing piece of artwork, but people are just so evil. A lot horses are poorly taken care of and they are beaten.

Animals like pigs, chickens, turkeys etc. are boiled alive, because people want the feathers and hair off of them so they can cook them easier. That is 100% torture. Animal lovers like me are completely against any animal cruelty. Honestly I would rather live with animals than humans for the rest of my life, and that is because humans can be so cruel and full of hatred, but animals are gentle. God created us to have authority over animals and we should use that authority in a responsible and kind way.

Black Beauty spoiler!

Black Beauty Introduction

Author Biograghy: Anna Sewell was born in Yarmouth, England on March 30, 1820 – and died in Old Catton, United Kingdom on April 25, 1878

Anna had a mother named Mary Wright Sewell, a father named Isaac Phillip Sewell, and a brother named Phillip Sewell.  Anna Sewell was an English novelist. She is best known as the author of the 1877 novel Black Beauty, one of the top 10 best selling novels ever written.  Even though she only wrote one book, it’s really famous.

Plot:

Part 1: Black Beauty’s first home is very peaceful. His mother, Duchess, taught him how to behave when he is broken in or when he is being driven. And his master was very kind and gentle and took very good acre of his horses. One night there was a bunny hunt and one of the men fell of  his horse and died, the horse broke his leg an had to be shot in the head. We learn that the horse that was shot, was Duchess’s son! When Beauty was 4 he was sold to Birtwick Park. His new owners, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon, were as good as his first owner. Mrs. Gordon gave Beauty his name. Here he meets the horses Merrylegs, Ginger, and Sir Oliver, and the grooms James Howard and John Manly. Ginger was a long-necked chestnut horse, she was also ill-tempered because of her previous owners, Sir Oliver had his poor tail shortened due to thoughtless ‘fashion’, and Merrylegs, a pony, is a trusted playmate of the Gordon and Blomefield children. Mr. Gordon and John Manly are both known to take issue with those who mistreat horses. James leaves because he has a better job opportunity, but before he leaves he takes Mr. and Mrs. Gordon to see some friends, the stable the horses are staying catches fire and James rushes to save them, they are saved!! Little Joe Green replaces James, he doesn’t know much about horses or how to care for them, but he learns after trying to help Beauty and accidentally getting her very sick! Joe is so sad about what he did, he even stopped a man that was abusing his horses and that man went to jail. Then Beauty and Ginger are sold because the Gordons must leave to a warmer climate for Mrs. Gordon’s health. Joe and MerryLegs go to the Vicar Blomefield’s, and Beauty and Ginger are sold to EarlShall Park.

Part 2: Their new mistress insists on the horses wearing the check-reins because they look more proper with their heads held up. Little does she know, it’s quite painful for the horses. One day Ginger acts up and goes wild. After this she is sold to a hunter which messes her up. One day she was riding Beauty, whom she called Black Auster, and then she tried riding another horse and that horse threw her of, Beauty ran for help and is much praised for that. Beauty thinks he is nicely settled until one night Reuben Smith was drunk and he dropped Beauty off at the horse shoe store and said he would be back in an hour. He ends up gone for about 5-7 hours. When he finally comes back, he takes Beauty on a dangerous ride and it leads to Reuben’s death. And Beauty’s knees are jacked. Ginger is also ruined by hard riding, but is given a chance to recover. Beauty is then sold to a livery stable meaning he can be sold to drivers who aren’t very good at driving, handling, or caring a horse. One customer though recognizes Beauty’s worth and makes it so that he is sold to Mr. Barry, a man who hired a groom for Beauty. This groom stole Beauty food and is arrested. Mr. Barry hires a groom who cares nothing of horses and Mr. Barry can’t take it so he sells Beauty.

Part 3: Beauty is taken to a horse and is sold to Jeremiah Barker, called Jerry, and Beauty’s stable-mate is named Captain, he was in the Crimean war. Jerry names Beauty jack. Jerry is a London cab driver and is perfectly excellent at his job. He never mistreats his horses and he takes good care of them. He has a wife ,Polly, and 2 kids who are very kind and gentle too. Jerry is a very wise and honest man. Later Jerry and Captain get into a cab accident and poor Captain must be put down. Captain is replace with Hotspur. One day on New Years Jerry and Beauty waited for 2 men for about 3 hours. Jerry catches a bad cold and gets Bronchitis, then Mrs. Fowler, Polly’s former employer, sent a letter saying that Jerry and his family could move to the country an into a cabin and that he can work for her. They accept and Governor Grant buys Hotspur and promises a good home for Beauty.

Part 4: Grant sold Beauty to a corn dealer. The man is good to Beauty, but the man’s supervisor, Jake, overworks the horses and uses the check-rein! One day Jake was going up hill with a heavy load with the check-rein on poor Beauty, while whipping Beauty to make him go faster. A lady stops Jake and tells him that his horse is trying his hardest, but its hard on him because he has the check-rein on so tight. Jake is impressed and he is then easier on Beauty. But the dark stables almost made Beauty blind!! He then is sold to another cab business and his owner is Nicolas Skinner. Skinner has a bunch of shabby cabs and over-worked drivers. The drivers are always frustrated an they take it all out by abusing the poor horses. There is a family who need a ride but they have a very heavy load, they insist on only Beauty carrying it, but later Beauty collapses an dis almost taken to the slaughter house! Beauty is then sold again to Farmer Thoroughgood and his grandson who know they can make Beauty sportful and energetic again. They succeed an they sell Beauty to the Blomfield sisters! Little Joe Green, although not so little anymore, recognizes Beauty! An they live happily, ever,

Black Beauty

Theme

Mistreatment of animals and upright behavior:

The theme mainly states how Anna feels about how animals are treated and act and also how man should treat animals and act. There are many incidents that happen that lead to either death or injury physical and emotionally. Anna thought that animals should have good behavior and always work their hardest, she also thought that drinking was so evil and man shall never commit it. There is one event where one of Beauty’s owners gets drunk and jacks up poor Beauty’s knees and gets him self killed!

Anna does very well in showing the reader different things horses go through by making Beauty meet horses who have gone through things such as; tail shortening, horses used in combat, and mistreated(Ginger).

Anna also disliked how horses are used for sport, like racing, and jumping risky jumps.

“We call them dumb animals, and so they are, for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words.”_Black Beauty

My Critical Overview

Positive side of things:

Black Beauty is one of my all time favorites. I liked how Anna described the littlest of things so specifically, it was so helpful. I also liked how it explains that if you do the littlest wrong thing, like drinking, it could lead to injury or even death.

Negative side of things:

There is only a couple things that bothered me, I think Ginger should have been with Beauty the whole time. I also think that Beauty’s name should have stayed the same.

Black Beauty Conclusion

In conclusion, I feel much different about horses and drinking. I have always loved all animals, but now that I know more about horses, I think they are one of my favorite animals! Black Beauty is definitely one of my all time favorites, because I love how Anna Sewell didn’t only write the book about horses, but about love and kindness. I would highly recommend this book to those who hate animal cruelty and to those who need to read a good book!

Book Report of ‘The Secret Of The Sealed Room’

Introduction
The Secret Of The Sealed room by Bailey MacDonald is a historical fiction. I found this story very interesting, because so many things were happening at one time. It was easy to imagine what was happening. This story is about a girl who try’s to gain her liberty and in the process she discovers that she is capable of doing what most girls in Boston couldn’t. Her father taught her how to be strong and brave and this ended up helping her with her desire for justice.

Summary of Book
The story is told by 14-year-old, Patience Martin. Her father died in a shipwreck and her mother of smallpox. One of the men Patience’s father boarded the ship with had a wife named Mrs. Abedela Worth, who was thought to be pregnant, and Patience’s father, Mr. Martin, wrote a contract saying that for seven years Patience indentured to Mrs. Worth. However, Patience didn’t stay the whole 7 years, there were many events that happened as a result Patience ran away because she wanted her freedom and wanted to feel and be loved. Where she ends up is no surprise.

Book Details: Characters
Patience Martin is a very confident, smart, and lovely young lady. She is very kind even though someone is mean to her, she can hold her temper really well.
Mrs. Abedela Worth was the wife of a man who died on the shipwreck with Patience’s father. She was very strict, she would often smack Patience on the face, she knew Patience was very helpful but she didn’t show any thanks or love.
Moll Bacon is a midwife who is very kind and she does all she can to make others happy. I think Moll is very warm-hearted, and loving and she cares about Patience.
Mr. Richard is Mrs. Worth’s brother. He is mean, bossy, and self-centered, he is always rude to everyone especially Patience.
Mr. David is Mr. Richard’s son, Mrs. Worth’s nephew. He is very secretive with everything he does, wrong or right.
Ben, Benjamin Franklin, he is Patience’s friend, very smart and knows his way all around town. He is confident to express his feelings to people he trusts. He shares with people he knows need it the most.
Betty Thayer is Mr. Richard’s cook. She is extremely kind and friendly to Patience, she is shy because Mr. Richard and everyone are mean to her so she just chooses to not talk to them. Betty has a little girl of her own that is Patience’s age, so Betty treats Patience like her own.
Dr. Blackthorn is the town’s best doctor, he is friendly to all. He is truthful and helpful.
James is Ben’s brother; he is not so kind, but he is kind to his friends, but to Ben and Patience he is practically an enemy.
The printing helpers are boys that help James print. James is nice to them because they are his friends. These printing helpers like to talk about how weak an dumb girls are. Of course, Patience and Ben completely disagree with them.

Book Details: Plot
It had been 4 awful years since Patience worked for Mrs. Worth, when Mrs. Worth seemed to be having labour pains. Everyone thought Mrs. Worth was pregnant because she had a big hump on her stomach. Everyone thinks Mrs. Worth died of childbirth. People come in to take Mrs. Worth’s body, then the doctor said it was poison and Mr. Richard asked “are you sure it was poison” The doctor replied “It was arsenic. A physician cannot mistake the symptoms.” Mr. Richard blames her death on Moll Bacon, because she gave Mrs. Worth a simple herb tea to ease her pain of ‘labour’ Moll also put a glass ball next to Mrs. Worth telling her she was going to watch her through that because Mrs. Worth didn’t want Moll to leave, but she told Patience it was an ordinary ball. So that gave another reason for Mr. Richard to accuse her of being a witch. But later in the story, it turns out she was not pregnant. The hump was cancer and the pain was arsenic! Mrs. Worth was poisoned by her own nephew, Mr. David Worth. He had some debts to pay and wanted Mrs. Worth’s iron box of money, he poisoned her by soaking her favorite candles in arsenic, and he knew she read with those candles very night. Patience started to live with Mr. Richard, but when she over-heard his conversation with a lawyer about selling Patience for pennies to a harsh master, she ran away. As she was looking for a place to stay, she remembered a boy named Ben who helped them get into Mrs. Worth’s bedroom through the window because she had locked the door (that’s when she died), so she went to the Boston print shop, that’s where Ben worked for his brother James, and asked for help. He showed her one of the places Mrs. Worth owned and said she could stay there for a while, but the place was right in front of a tannery, so it stunk. Ben said he would come back with clothes, books, and food for her. When she got the food rats came in! They came up with a plan, Patience was to dress as a Quaker, darken her eyebrows with chalk, and take the name Mercy Dyer because in those days no one looked twice at a Quaker, then she could work at the print shop to earn money and to have a place to stay, there was a little cot she could sleep in. She stays there for a while, and at the same time Ben and Patience try to figure out how to get Moll out of jail. After a while of investigating, Mr. David walked into the print shop and recognized Patience! Then she had to give up. And by this time David had been poisoning Mr. Richard! Then Patience, Ben, James, Dr. Blackthorn, Moll, Mr. Thomas(judge), David, constable Wilkes, Mr. Richard, and Betty Thayer had a meeting in the print shop. Ben and Patience said what they new about the poisoning and the stealing of the iron box, Mr. Richard thought Patience had stolen it, then Judge Thomas turned to Moll and told her all charges were turned away from her. Everyone was happy except for David, who was being dragged out of the shop.

Evaluation and Conclusion
As you see, there are many things that happen in the story that demonstrate justice. When Ben and Patience tell all the adults their side of the story, the hidden things come to light, David doesn’t get away with his crime, and Moll is freed. At the end, Ben bought Patience’s indentures and let her go free. Moll welcomes Patience to live with her, and Patience agrees. I highly recommend this book to those of you who love adventure, seeing justice be done and first-hand stories.

EEEEEEK! So excited!

I don’t think I have ever done a post about my parents’ jobs. My dad is an English teacher(we live in Egypt), and my mom is a doula meaning she helps women before and after birth. Like she teaches classes on breastfeeding, etc. she also does water-birth, and I am absolutely in love with what my mama does!
The Doctor, Dr. Hanaa Abul Kassem, calls me her “youngest doula”!. Well anyways, I am going to be in a childbirth documentary tonight!!! I am going to act and everything! Although I am quite nervous(I have never acted in a real thing) , but I am pretty confident I guess! Wish me luck!
